Prime Minister Lawrence Wong addressed a gathering of over 1,600 union representatives and tripartite stakeholders at the May Day Rally held at Downtown East on Friday, May 1, 2026. Acknowledging the profound economic changes driven by artificial intelligence, he emphasized that while certain roles will inevitably vanish, the government remains committed to safeguarding the workforce and generating higher-quality employment opportunities.
Recognizing the Reality of Technological Disruption
Wong cautioned that the transition would not be without turbulence. He noted that AI agents are rapidly evolving beyond basic conversational tools, now capable of independently managing complex workflows that previously required entire teams. While he acknowledged widespread public concern regarding job security and future opportunities, he drew parallels to past technological shifts, such as the widespread adoption of spreadsheet software in the mid-1990s, which eliminated data entry positions but simultaneously created demand for skilled analysts and accountants. He stressed that the current AI revolution will be significantly more impactful than previous digital transformations.
Government Support and Structural Reforms
To navigate this transition, the administration outlined several concrete measures. These include strengthening the SkillsFuture initiative and consolidating Workforce Singapore with SkillsFuture Singapore into a single new organization. Additionally, the government plans to expand company-level training committees to address sector-specific challenges, recognizing that a uniform approach will not suffice. Earlier in the year’s Budget address, Wong also announced that individuals enrolling in designated AI training programs will receive complimentary six-month access to premium AI software. He also highlighted the recently launched Tripartite Jobs Council, spearheaded by the National Trades Union Congress, which aims to coordinate support for both businesses and employees adapting to automation.
Union Leaders Emphasize Mindset and Inclusivity
Industry representatives responded to the address by underscoring the necessity of cultural and psychological adaptation alongside policy changes. NTUC President K Thanaletchimi stressed that age should not be a barrier to skill acquisition, noting that overcoming mental resistance is crucial for progress. Nominated MP Sanjeev Kumar Tiwari, who also serves as general secretary of the Amalgamated Union of Public Employees, highlighted the administration’s commitment to protecting livelihoods rather than specific positions as a particularly resonant message. NTUC Assistant Secretary-General Yeo Wan Ling pointed to specific vulnerable groups, including those re-entering the workforce after career breaks, displaced employees, and older workers. She also addressed concerns within the transport sector regarding autonomous vehicles and raised questions about how existing employment frameworks will support gig and platform workers.
A Call for National Solidarity
Concluding his remarks, Wong reflected on Singapore’s historical resilience, acknowledging the nation’s inherent vulnerabilities and narrow margin for error. He paused to share the words of Mr. Nisar Keshvani, a passenger on an SAF repatriation flight, who described the profound sense of returning home. Wong asserted that whether facing economic shocks or technological upheaval, the country’s unity will ensure no resident is abandoned. He urged citizens to approach the AI era with confidence and proactive engagement, framing collective solidarity as the foundation for future prosperity.
